Silver Maple Tree (damage to trunk)

In the process of getting two older Silver Maple trees removed (due to their roots damaging our foundation (and once they were down we noted that they had rotted, hollowed centers)) a third remaining tree had damage done to the trunk where a falling part from one of the other trees struck it. 

Should we apply "the black paint" to the damaged area?  I thought that was outdated and proven not to help the tree but neighbors and tree removal service are telling me otherwise.  Please advise on what we should do with trunk where bark has been rubbed off.
